Adaptability
Traveling to any foreign country alone requires much adapting. I learned how to take initiative and challenge myself to explore Seoul while I was there. One of the most significant challenges I faced was scheduling a Covid Test before returning to the US. The program provided us with Covid testing upon arrival, but the last minute informed us that we would be responsible for scheduling a test to return home. This proved very difficult as I could not read the Korean language, and Covid testing information was not easily accessible online, as it was in the States. I had to be very adaptable and remain calm during a time of stress. I reached out to some local health facilities and ask if they administered Covid tests. After a long time searching, I was able to find a local ENT practice that was able to help me, as I explained that I was a foreigner that needed a test result to fly home.
Organization
This semester, I have really honed in on the routine that works for me, and I have learned the value of being organized. It has greatly helped me to stay on top of my tasks and improved my time management tenfold from freshman year. I have learned that Google calendar is my best friend and that keeping a running list of things to do, with deadlines can greatly help my productivity. As the Performance Coordinator for the Korean Undergraduate Student Association, it was imperative that I stay organized because I was in charge of releasing the rehearsal schedules for all performers, and planning the Tech Rehearsal before show day. For everything to run smoothly and for everyone to be prepared, I had to make sure I was communicating clearly to everyone their responsibilities.
Teamwork
I was able to work on a group project during my internship last summer, where we would be presenting to a board of C-suite executives. My responsibility was to work with 40 other interns across the country, to prepare a presentation for our supervisors and other employees at the company. When collaborating in a group, I typically take up the role of the mediator, and I was able to make sure everyone's voice was being heard. This can be quite difficult with so many people, especially as we were all communicating online, but we were able to stay on task and organized by breaking up into small groups. I encouraged my peers and made sure to always acknowledge other people's perspectives before sharing my own ideas. We learned that by listening to one another and building off ideas, we could be much more productive and repeat less information.
Effective Communication
All of my experiences and interactions with other people have improved my communication skills. I have worked in various sales associate roles where I am responsible for rectifying customer complaints and providing excellent service. I have taught children and adults how to dance, taught English to refugee families and foreign students, and mentored children all through high school. All of these experiences taught me how to adapt my communication and leadership style to address the different needs of others. My ability to listen, empathize and anticipate the needs of others has allowed me to help in various settings. I have been able to broaden my perspective, all while making an impact on those around me. I always want to demonstrate respect for differences and I have learned how to respectfully engage with people from all walks of life.
